Your factory floor doesn't need the cloud anymore
USI just launched an edge AI camera built for factory-floor inspection - defect detection, OCR, component positioning, and assembly verification, all processed locally, no round-trip to a server

Quality inspection has always been one of the more painful parts of running a production line: slow, manual, and inconsistent depending on who's on shift. That's starting to change, and not because of some far-off innovation - it's happening right now, on the factory floor, without a data centre in sight.
Universal Scientific Industrial (USI), a global electronics manufacturer, has just launched an AI Smart Camera built specifically for factory-floor inspection. It handles object detection, defect identification, optical character recognition, component positioning, assembly verification and product classification - and it does all of this locally, on the device, with no need to send images to the cloud for processing (IoT Tech News, 2026; Vietnam Investment Review, 2026).
What USI actually launched
The AI Smart Camera pairs a high-resolution, low-light-capable camera module with onboard edge computing and a no-code/low-code model training platform, meaning line staff can train inspection models without a background in AI or data science (Vietnam Investment Review, 2026). It connects over Ethernet, Power over Ethernet, HDMI and MicroSD, and comes in a ruggedised housing built for the realities of a manufacturing environment - dust, vibration, heat, the works (IoT Tech News, 2026).
Justin Chang, Director of USI's Vertical Mobility Solution Center, put it plainly: demand for AI-powered vision applications is "growing rapidly across the manufacturing sector," and the goal of the new platform is to help customers "accelerate the adoption of smart manufacturing" (Vietnam Investment Review, 2026). Worth noting - this isn't a concept still in the lab. USI has already deployed the system inside its own manufacturing operations, using it as a working reference before taking it to market (Vietnam Investment Review, 2026).
Why processing on the device - not the cloud - is the point
Most factory networks weren't built with high-bandwidth image processing in mind. Streaming a constant feed of high-resolution images to a remote server for analysis chews through bandwidth and introduces latency you don't want on a moving line. Processing at the edge solves both problems: decisions happen in milliseconds, right where the image is captured, and none of that raw visual data - which, for a lot of manufacturers, is commercially sensitive - ever has to leave the building (IoT Tech News, 2026).
The efficiency case isn't theoretical either. USI's earlier AI-based inspection systems have already delivered more than a 60% improvement in inspection efficiency compared to manual, human-dependent quality checks (IoT Tech News, 2026). That's the kind of number that tends to get a factory manager's attention.

The bigger trend behind the headline
USI's launch isn't an isolated event - it's a data point in a much larger shift. The global edge AI market was valued at roughly USD 24.9 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 118.7 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual rate of 21.7% (Grand View Research, 2026). Manufacturing is specifically called out as one of the strongest growth segments, driven by Industry 4.0 adoption and use cases like predictive maintenance, anomaly detection and - you guessed it - computer-vision-based quality inspection (Grand View Research, 2026). Asia Pacific is expected to be a major driver of that growth, on the back of rapid industrialisation and large-scale IoT adoption across the region (Grand View Research, 2026).
That trend has real weight in Singapore specifically. Manufacturing accounts for about 21.6% of Singapore's nominal GDP, and the country ranks as the world's 5th-largest exporter of high-tech goods (Singapore Economic Development Board, n.d.). The government has been actively pushing Industry 4.0 adoption for years - including through tools like the Smart Industry Readiness Index, designed to help manufacturers of different sizes work out where they stand and where to invest next (Singapore Economic Development Board, n.d.). In other words: the infrastructure, appetite and support are already there. Edge AI vision is simply the next practical piece to slot in.
What this means if you're running an SME production line
You don't need to be a multinational with a dedicated AI team to benefit from this. That's the whole point of "edge" and "no-code" - the barrier to entry has dropped a long way in a short time. If you're currently relying on manual visual QA, or you've looked at computer vision before and found the setup too complex or too expensive, this generation of hardware is worth a second look.
- Start with one inspection point - a single station where defects are costly or hard to catch by eye - rather than trying to overhaul the whole line at once.
- Check what data actually needs to stay on-site. For a lot of manufacturers, keeping product images and process data local isn't just a performance choice, it's a confidentiality one.
- Factor grant support into the business case. Automation and digitalisation projects like this typically qualify under Singapore's SME grant schemes - worth checking eligibility before you price anything out.
